This guide will explain how to fix Unknown Baseband, NULL or Invalid IMEI & SIM / Network not detected on Mediatek (MTK) devices. A null IMEI or unknown Baseband could make your Mediatek phone unable to detect SIM Card(s), network signals (Emergency Mode), make calls or dial short codes (to check your account balance etc). This is because your Baseband, IMEI, WiFi & Bluetooth addresses are important for radio communication.

What causes Unknown Baseband / IMEI and issues detecting SIM Cards or Network signal on a Mediatek phone?

The primary cause is the wiping/corruption of the Secro and NVRAM (or NVDATA) partition(s). This could occur when you:

Do a factory reset on the phone (rare)
Format the NV partition(s) using a Mediatek flash tool or TWRP
Flash a custom ROM or incompatible stock ROM / firmware
Tamper with your IMEI using an incompatible IMEI changer

How to repair Medatek IMEI and Baseband

Before you proceed, ensure that your Mediatek phone has a valid Baseband (not NULL Baseband). If your Baseband is unknown then download the firmware for your model and flash using SP Flash Tool. Flashing the firmware (or at least Secro ) ought to restore Baseband. With Baseband regained you can then proceed with fixing IMEI

Engineering Mode Method (Root required)

Download and Install Tool hero (formerly known as Mobile Uncle) then grant superuser permission. You could also use MTK Engineering Mode
- For those using MTK Engineering mode, launch the app and select MTK Settings
- For those new devices using Tool Hero (formerly known as Mobile Uncle), launch the app and select Engineering mode > Super Engineering mode
- For those old devices using Mobile Uncle, launch the app and select Engineer Mode > Engineer mode (MTK)
Navigate to the Connectivity tab
Select CDS information
Select Radio Information
At Phone 1: Insert the command below then click Send at command

Code:

AT+EGMR=1,7,"IMEI1"
At Phone 2: Insert the command below then click Send at command

Code:

AT+EGMR=1,10,"IMEI2"
If you get an error like "This command is not allowed in user build" then leave a space between AT+ and EGMR as show below

Code:

AT+ EGMR=The rest of the code
Go back to Mobile uncle home screen
Click on Engineer Mode
Select Engineer mode (Android)
Select Phone information
Click Turn on radio

MP0B_001 Method

Download ROM toolbox lite from Playstore
Download IMEI.zip (to create a new IMEI file) then unzip the content of the folder (imei.exe) to a folder on your desktop
In the command prompt, navigate to the imei.exe containing the folder you just created on your desktop
NOTE
cd\ then Enter returns to root directory WHILE cd.. then Enter goes up one directory
cd foldername then Enter navigates to a folder called foldername
A faster method is to open the imei.exe containing folder > Hold down Shift > Right-click on an empty space > Select "Open Command Window here"
When you're inside the imei folder in command prompt, type
imei.exe <15digit_IMEI_1> <15digit_IMEI_2>egimei.exe 123456789111111 123456789111124
Press Enter
If both IMEIs you gave are of the correct format, a file named MP0B_001_NEW will be created. Rename it MP0B_001.
Now you can send it to the SD of your phone
Install ROM toolbox lite then go to root explorer
In root explorer, delete the existing MP0B_001 file (located @ device/data/nvram/md/NVRAM/NVD_IMEI) and replace it with the one you just created
Long press the new MP0B_001, go to permissions and tick all 9 boxes at the top then select ok (don't tick special permissions)
Restart your phone
Your SIMs should be detected, IMEI reflected and the Baseband version change from unknown to what it should be.
Note that getting this done might not be this direct due to different scenarios but replacing the MP0B_001 file is the ultimate goal in order to fix the issue.

IMEI Replacement Method

This method involves the use of MTK droid tools and is only applicable when your SIM cards are detected but IMEI is invalid or null. To do this:

Download MTK droid tools
Download PdaNet
Enable USB debugging on the phone then connect it to the PC (don't enable mass storage)
Install PdaNet on the PC with the phone connected; you should get a message saying drivers installed successfully.
Extract then launch MTK droid tools on the PC (still with phone connected to PC)
MTK droid tools should detect and display your phone's details
Click on IMEI/NVRAM
Supply the IMEI(s) then click replace
Restart your phone if it isn't automatically restarted
Your IMEI issue should have been resolved

NVRAM Restore Method

* Note that you need a working phone of the same model to backup NVRAM first

Download MTK droid tools
Download PdaNet
Enable USB debugging on the GOOD phone then connect it to the PC (don't enable mass storage)
Install PdaNet on the PC with the phone connected; you should get a message saying drivers installed successfully.
Extract then launch MTK droid tools on the PC (still with phone connected to PC)
MTK droid tools should detect and display the details of your phone
Click IMEI / NVRAM
Click Backup
When the backup is complete, open the MTK Folder > BackupNVRAM to confirm that the backup was successful
Connect the phone with Basebrand / IMEI error to the PC still with MTK droid tools open
Still under IMEI / NVRAM, click Restore
Select the appropriate files from the windows that pop up
Reboot the phone once the procedure is complete

You'll see it on the phone's body (after removing the battery) / carton or you can just use any valid IMEI

HOW I SURVIVE/FIX AN UNKNOWN BASEBAND/RADIO/INVALID-IMEI ON MY TECNO M3

So it all goes like this, i just accidentally execute the init binary, in seconds all i know is my phone rebooting itself with unknown baseband. surprise to me , what goes wrong?. so i went after the su log file to read the log and i was able to verify what happen, when init tries to creates the radio folder (/protect_f and /protect_s) which contains the radio files, it founds out that it was busy so it delete the former one to create the new one deleting the old one with the files but hopefully i've once backup the whole init and the radio folder to my sdcard . so all i have to do is copy the files (MP0D_000 and ST33A004 from the /protect_s/md/ directory that i copied ) to /protect_f/md/ directory , which automagically create another twin file of ST33A004 in /protect_s/md/ directory called ST33B004 and immediately my phone alerting that it has detected a network so all i do is to confirm by clicking ok. thatz all

Apply this method only if you restore your IMEI and it doesnt work or if you have an unknown baseband/radio problem/invalid imei.........!!!

I later get my phone work afta flashing it with spflash tool...tanxs to everyone 4 dia support n suggestion..it means alot

Pls am havin prblm wit ma tecno m3

My phone is showin dis weneva (connection problm or invalid MMI) i try to chek my acct balance n i cant make call wit it but d netwrk signal is showin veri well but i cant call n chek acct balance pls i reali need ur hlp on dis on hw to retify d problem becoz dis prblm startd wen i rooted my phone

If i put my glo sim i can mak cal wit it n browse wit it but if i put my mtn n zain i will nt b able to browse ,call or even chek acct balance .

Does the GLO SIM work on both Sim1 and Sim2 or only on one of them?
