I did regular install according to those directions, which was already installed, chose to repair; phone was still showing up as QHSUSB_BULK. Moved on to manual install, and encountered a problem:

Okay, that worked, so I've made a little progress, thank you! However, back to this guide, and I'm stuck on step 10. The interface is different enough that I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but more importantly, the start button to run it is greyed out, I can't do anything with it. I may take a crack at the guide I was using again, after I've slept, while I wait for further help here.

That worked! So my phone is backed up, now what do I do? @hovatek said I shouldn't need the firehose file or any of the extra stuff I mentioned to root the phone, but didn't say what to do once it's backed up. Also thank you so much for your continued help; I haven't had a smartphone that works as a phone ever, and the notion of finally being able to use this one once it's rooted is very exciting.

Patch the boot.img from your backup using magisk, then flash using fastboot.

If, rather than using fastboot to try and flash the patched img, I use QFIL instead, I have problems there as well. First I get FireHose Fail (system can't find specified file), and if I hit the download button again it goes for a bit and then I get Sahara Fail. I've done everything mentioned in this thread (https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-30141.html); there are no spaces in the names, I've tried both firehose files I have, I'm using the latest version of QFIL. I really don't understand what it means by "use QFIL tool from within QPST"; does it mean the QFIL.exe that's in the QPST folder? Or do I launch some other exe in that folder that then has the option to open QFIL? It's not very clear.

You could either download QFIL as a zip or install a software named QPST which in turn contains QFIL; the latter is the better approach.
To use QFIL, you need to have some other XML files which you don't have so a better approach might be https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-26213.html
Are you sure bootloader is unlocked? How did you unlock it?
