Thank you guys, made some progress. Using v1.9 on another computer, I was able to create the twrp recovery image. However, when I attempt to flash it, I'm getting the SP Flash 6045 error re: missing signature, etc.
This leads back to my original question:
Is is possible to successfully flash an unsigned recovery or boot img on a device that uses boot-sign.img, recovery-sign.img, etc?
Is it possible to re-sign this twrp recovery so that it can be flashed w/ SP Flash?
Is it worth trying to flash it via fastboot?

If I simply try to boot the twrp.img w/o flashing, It says unlock=fail, but it is obviously unlocked.
I tried to "Write Memory" from SP Flash Tool, also freezes at logo screen.
If I try to flash back to stock recovery with fastboot, it tells me "not a valid boot image"
I can successfully flash back the stock recovery with SP Flash tool.
This device sucks. Really hope there's a warm place in hell waiting for anyone who works so hard to make these devices un-rootable.
Would be so cool if someone hacked their car and set the heat/ac to 45 degrees F and full-page ads on their gps with NO POSSIBILITY of ever changing it :-)

All of those I created can be flashed and boot in recovery, but not a single partition is mounted.
I can not repartition or do anything to them.
I get errors like these..
E: Unable to find partition size for '/boot' and '/recovery' and '/misc'
E: Primary block device '/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/userdata' for mount point '.data' is not present!
E: unable to recreate /data/media folder.
E: unable to find partition size for '/sbl1/
E: unable to mount '/system' and '/data' and '/cache'
I think the twrp.fstab or recovery.fstab or not created in a proper way... so twrp does not know where to find them.
I am trying to get twrp on my Archos hello 10 with a MTK 8167 cpu.
The device has an unlocked bootloader, its vbmeta is patched, and it's rooted using the latest magiks.
Can any1 pont me in the right direction on how to properly find the partitions needed in twrp.
If anyone can share whats in their twrp or recovery .fstap I would be grateful.

I currently am using twrp 3.2.1, and modded the twrp.fstap and got a bit more working.
You could try other versions of the tool
