Rumors of a Tecno Spark 2 surface: Android Oreo (Go Edition) + Face Unlock

Less than two weeks after Itel announced their first Android Oreo (Go Edition) powered device, the Itel A32F, Tecno is rumored to be preparing to launch Tecno Spark 2. I’ve not been able to find an official statement from Tecno so this is pretty much word on the street.

Android Oreo (Go Edition) is lightweight and optimized to run on low end smartphones. In a price-sensitive market like Africa, Go Edition is a perfect blend between cheap Smartphones and Security; little wonder Itel and Tecno are looking to secure the low income market segment.

Tecno Spark 2 core specs

Below are the rumored specifications of the upcoming Tecno Spark 2

  • Android Oreo 8.1 (Go Edition)
  • 6 inches 18:9 Display
  • 1GB or 2GB RAM
  • 16GB ROM
  • 8 MP front camera
  • 13 MP back camera
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Face Unlock
  • Mediatek¬†1.3GHz Quad-Core processor
  • 3500 mAh battery

My thoughts

IF the above info eventually checks out then it might sell pretty well but (like Itel A32F), the absence of 4G LTE could be a reservation for specs-aware potential buyers. Tecno is notorious for not pushing version updates (except on the Camon C8 & Phantom 6 Plus) so if you hope to taste Android Oreo on your Tecno phone then prepare to buy another.

I’ve been wondering for a while now when next we’ll see a Qualcomm Snapdragon powered Tecno phone since Mediatek has temporarily pulled out of the Flagship System On a Chip (SoC) race; their recent announcement of the MediaTek Helio P22 mid-range SoC being further confirmation.

Whether or not this rumor is true, time will tell

Would you buy the Tecno Spark 2?
