It's not a golden rule...it just depends.
There are situations where (even with a working device) you should check the preloader (e.g. for models that use preloader authentication or require a signed preloader to be checked for any operation to work) and situations where you should uncheck it (if you're uncertain about the firmware compatibility or are flashing a similar build).
With so many securities like AVB and Anti-rollback, several other partitions could cause your device to go just as dead as a preloader would.

I am trying the instructions.

After running python main.py

I only got...

Waiting for device (not brom)

and then holding volume down and connecting the usb.

found device = 038d:2000
