I have followed your tutorials, and have been running a rooted phone (a Conquest F2 with MT6739 CPU (MTK/MediaTek) on Android 8.1.0) with Magisk (with a little help using this tutorial https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-21970.html). I patched the backed-up boot image (obtained through the guide above) using the Magisk app and then flashed it to the phone using the SP Flash Tool.

It has been working very well for a number of months. So thank you for those guides, they're very useful!

Now, I have been having troubles getting a working version of TWRP on the phone. I flash the patched 'recovery.img', enter recovery

(1. Turn phone off
2. Press 'Power Button' + 'Volume Up' Together
3. Use volume up to move arrow/select [Recovery Mode]
4. Press volume down to confirm)

I have tried to patching using MTK Auto Philz recovery porter V1.4 by Team Hovatek and Mediatek Auto TWRP Recovery Porter V1.4 by Team Hovatek, plus have tried using 8.1 and 8.1 Go.

The phone gives me the option to select recovery, but then after selecting and some time simply starts up as normal.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Attached is the original "recovery.img" for the phone

use a root file manager to rename or delete the file recovery-from-boot.p from within /system partition
then try porting twrp using the tool @ https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-21839.html
ensure to 3 twrp from all 3 android 8 versions i.e 8.0, 8.1 and 8.1g

Thank you for your help. I have renamed 'recovery-from-boot.p' to 'recovery-from-boot.p.bak' in the System partition using 'Total Commander for Android'.

As you mentioned I have created 3 recovery image files using your "Mediatek (MTK) Auto TWRP recovery porter by Team Hovatek" software to try each version of Android 8...

One for 8.0, one for 8.1 and one for 8.1 Go:

On each I have tried to enter recovery by doing the following:

2. Press 'Power Button' + 'Volume Up' Together
3. Use volume up to move arrow and select Recovery Mode
4. Press volume down to confirm

Almost immediately the phone shows the Conquest start up screen (albeit a bit slowly - so I presume it is trying to something). The phone then starts with no sign of TWRP.

I have been able to re-flash stock recovery fine. Once stock recovery is flashed (using SP Flash Tool) the phone enters recovery mode (as above) fine.

I am wondering if it is maybe a screen resolution issue. The resolution is 480x854 pixels. I don't have the technical ability to check this though, so it is just a hunch.

the right combo for recovery should be vol up + power button not the other way round
zip and upload your stock recovery file then post the download link here, you can upload to any cloud service eg google drive, etc
