I have an MTK phone (TYT IP98) that I was trying to root with Magisk.

Before doing that I unlocked the bootloader then installed Magisk Manager, patched boot.img and tried to upload it.
Dm-verity was however stopping me from uploading it.
So I ran: "fastboot flashing unlock" and "fastboot flashing unlock_critical" to bypass the dm verity check.
At reboot I had to start from factory settings (which is fine).
Unfortunately at that point I wasn't able to install any app whatsoever: this means any app downloaded from the the Google store and apps of which I had the apk file on sd card.

I was stuck.

I thought I should make a TWRP custom recovery and made one that was probably faulty: I mean it would start but had some quirks. With that I attempted to make a backup which failed. So I rebooted.

Long story short now at every reboot I'm presented with the following screen:

https://ibb.co/PtMTrvx

Past that screen the system starts normally but still I can't install any apps whatsoever.

So I went back my steps: I restored the original boot.img and recovery.img, relocked the bootloader and ran the "fastboot flashing lock" to restore the original factory settings.
Finally I cleared the cache and flashed the device with the complete original rom. NO JOY.
Unfortunately the writing is still there at every reboot. Now I don't know what else I should do.
Any advice is welcome.

Thank you
Mike

These are the files I was able to download FROM the device with wwr before attempting the root procedure (Of course the patched boot and the twrp recovery are mine and were added later). I strongly suspect that my homemake TWRP recovery might have damaged something.

Flashtools would allow me to use only the files with an extension.

Am I missing something?

Thank you

confirm if you made this backup after you already unlocked bootloader of the device? if yes, then try formatting ONLY seccfg partition using sp flash tool ; use the guide @ https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-21638.html
also confirm that when you select the scatter filein SPft that stock boot and recovery were both selected not the custom images you have in the same folder location

Yes, if I'm not mistaken I think I first unlocked the bootloader and then did the backup.
And yes, when I restored the system I used stock boot and recovery.

So now I formatted the seccfg partition and the warning message is gone. BRILLIANT! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

However I still CANNOT install ANY apps either from the store or as apk resident on the sd card. Because every time I get the following message: https://ibb.co/LdN4q1F

Of course I cleared cache and data from the PlayStore

Any clues?

you could try clearing cache, data and uninstalling updates from playstore, play services and package installer
or better still try a factory reset

Actually I've done all of the above (besides, this happens right after a factory reset!!) what else can I do? The phone as it is it's unusable.
Any other partition to format? Maybe?
Thanks

Ok a little update. Apparently I needed to enable (?? why?) the installation of apps with the following code: *#13579*#. Problem solved. I can't believe I had to ENABLE such a thing!!! Jeeee

Hi X3non,

I'm forced to reopen this old thread because, after stupidly resetting the phone in a foolish attempt to upload a GSI rom, now I'm back at square one trying to restore the old system. I have to point out that, before resetting the phone I did a FULL rom dump of the working rom with WWR, but, when I restored it, to my surprise I got a message that the phone was encrypted and that I had to start all over again with factory settings.

CURRENT SCENARIO
This is an Android 9 phone encrypted with DM Verity 1.0. It does NOT have ramdisk, so Magisk says that i have to patch the recovery, because root would only work by starting the phone from a patched recovery.

At the moment the phone starts with this writing: https://ibb.co/dmY94kw then it boots normally, but I want to remove the writing and root it again. Hoping to remove the writing I did:

fastboot flashing lock -------------> lock PASS but when I did
fastboot flashing unlock ----------------> unlock FAILED!!
fastboot flashing unlock_critical -------> unlock FAILED.

I clearly remember that when I first rooted this phone those commands were executed with success, so now I don't know what to do. What I remember is that I didn't need a TWRP recovery to get root and everything was done successfully with fastboot and later with Magisk.

Do you have any recommendations (beside stop messing with this phone since it was working ok)?

Thank you
Mike
