Maybe USB is bad.

Are you trying to Dual boot (Windows and Ubuntu) or you want to run only Ubuntu on the PC?
How did you create the Ubuntu DVD?

What procedure are you following to install Ubuntu? Have you tried Virtual Box?

Do you mean Cannot access Com1 ?
Try changing the COM Port in Virtual box under settings. Check device manager for available port numbers
