Please assist window media player cannot play file...

Hi. please am trying to play mp3 on my pc running window 7 ultimate, but I get a message:
(Window Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. there might not be a sound devices installed on your computer. it might be in use with another program. or it might not be functioning properly)
please how do I fix it? thanks
