It doesn't work that way ,if u are using vendor_boot that's not how to add driver and that is also not directory to driver,lib/modules should be separated from vendor and system folders

I ran a build; no flags, no patch.zip and it built successfully

Maybe you try another build, no flag, just patch.zip. This should help you identify why build is failing
