After rooting, a few users encounter problems with Google applications not being able to connect to or access the internet. This of course means you can't login. The affected apps could include (but isn't limited to) Gmail, Google Play Store, Google accounts, Google Hangouts, Contacts sync, Google Drive, Google maps etc. To confirm that this issue is root related, these apps are able to connect to the internet once the phone is unrooted.
The problem is the hosts file
How to fix internet connection issues / problems on Google applications after rooting
- Root the phone
- Download and install a root browser apk like ROM Toolbox lite or ES file explorer
- Navigate to System > Etc folder
- Open the hosts file using a note editor
- It should look something like
Code:127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 ip6-localhost
127.179.155.107 android.clients.google.com
- Skip the first line, delete everything else then save and reboot the phone
- If that doesn't work then delete the hosts file
- Sometimes, logging into your Google account (on a browser) and disabling 2-step verification does the trick
