This guide will explain how to fix "avbtool.py: Given image does not look like a vbmeta image" when trying to view the contents of a vbmeta image.

The genesis of the problem is that avbtool expects the vbmeta (when viewed in a hex editor) to begin with 41 56 42 30

If there's anything before this (e.g DHTB sign) then you'll get an error.

How to fix Given image does not look like a vbmeta image

  1. Select all items before 41 56 42 30

  2. Delete the selected items and save

  3. Re-run the avbtool command

Important Notice
  • Your padding script (when creating a custom vbmeta) should account for whatever you had to remove I order to allow avbtool read the vbmeta image
