This tutorial will explain how to use macOS on a Windows PC using VMware Workstation Player. It will come in handy for those looking to follow macOS tutorials but are restricted to a Windows PC.

Requirements


Steps to setup macOS on Windows using Vmware Workstation Player


Follow the steps below to run macOS as a guest OS in a Windows host PC

  1. Extract the vmware unlocker zip

  2. Launch the command prompt as Administrator and cd to the unlocker folder

  3. Run the command:

    win-install.cmd

  4. Wait till the unlocker is done patching vmware

  5. Launch vmware workstation player and click Create a New Virtual Machine

  6. Tick "I will install the operating system later" then click Next

  7. Tick "Apple Mac OS X", choose the macOS version of your vmdk (e.g 10.13 for High Sierra) then click Next

  8. Name your virtual machine then click Browse

  9. Choose the folder you wish to save your vmware files to and click OK

  10. Click Next

  11. Increase the storage space or leave it as default if it'll be sufficient and click Next

  12. Click Finish

  13. Click Edit Virtual Machine Settings

  14. Click Hard Disk

  15. Click Remove

  16. Click Add

  17. Choose Hard Disk and click Next

  18. Tick SATA and click Next

  19. Tick "use an existing virtual disk" and click Next

  20. Click Browse

  21. Choose the macOS vmdk file

  22. Click Finish

  23. Click Keep Existing Format

  24. Click OK

  25. Click Play virtual machine

  26. You might see "The cpu has been disabled by the guest operating system. Power off or reset the virtual machine." This can be easily fixed.

  27. Click the arrow in front of the pause icon

  28. Click Yes

  29. Navigate to the folder where you saved the vmware files and open the Vmware virtual machine configuration file (.vmx) using notepad

  30. Add the lines below and save the file.

    For Intel, add this code:

    For AMD, add this code

    Note: You can find out your processor type by right-clicking My Computer or This PC and looking under Processor

  31. Launch vmware workstation player and play the macOS machine. Suppose it's stuck at the Apple icon without a loading bar, close vmware workstation, and re-launch.

  32. Follow the setup till you get to the macOS desktop

Important Notice
  • If your PC is lagging then you could half the default RAM allocated to macOS and the virtual machine could still boot fine
  • If you're having trouble downloading VMWare
    1. Go to the Broadcom website: https://support.broadcom.com/
    2. Create an account and Log in
    3. On left click Software
    4. Expand "VMware Cloud Foundation"
    5. Select "My Downloads"
    6. Search for "VMware Workstation" or visit https://support.broadcom.com/group/ecx/free-downloads
    7. Search for "VMware Workstation Pro" and click it
    8. Select "VMware Workstation Pro 17.0 for Windows"
    9. Select the version of your choice
    10. Select "I agree to the Terms and Conditions"
    11. At the lower right click on blue arrow to download
