The following error message appears on the
BlackBerry® smartphone when it is connected to a
computer that is running the BlackBerry Desktop
Manager using a USB cable:
USB charging current is insufficient
Complete the following steps until resolution is
obtained.
Step 1 - An earlier version of BlackBerry Desktop
Manager is installed that contains an incompatible
version of the BlackBerry USB drivers.
To resolve this issue, complete the following steps:
1. Perform a clean uninstall of the BlackBerry®
Desktop Software. For instructions,
2. Download and install the latest version of
BlackBerry Desktop Software from the
wireless service provider's web site.
Step 2 - The BlackBerry smartphone is incorrectly
detected by Windows Device Manager as a mass
storage device.
To resolve this issue, complete the following steps:
1. Disable mass storage mode on the
BlackBerry smartphone.
2. On the computer, uninstall the Mass Storage
device listed under Universal Serial Bus
Controllers in the Windows Device Manager.
3. On the computer, click Action and select Scan
for Hardware Changes . The BlackBerry
smartphone should be recognized as
BlackBerry device and the error message
should disappear.
Step 3 - The computer is connected to a docking
station or the BlackBerry smartphone is connected
to a USB hub.
To resolve this issue, complete the following steps:
1. If a computer is being used, check that it is
not connected to a docking station.
2. Make sure that the BlackBerry smartphone is
not connected to a USB hub.
Step 4 - There is a problem with the USB port on the computer.
Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to a different
USB port on the computer.
Note: Power is limited to ports in the front of a PC,
utilizing the back ports is recommended.
Step 5 - The computer's Power Management is
turned on.
Turn off Power Management by completing the
following steps:
1. On the computer, click Start > Settings >
Control Panel > System. The Systems
Properties screen appears.
2. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager .
The Device Manager screen appears.
3. Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers .
The expanded USB list appears.
4. Right-click USB Root Hub and click Disable .
5. Double-click USB Root Hub. The USB Root
Hub Properties screen appears.
6. On the Power Management tab, clear the
Allow the computer to turn off this device to
save power option on all root hubs.
7. Click OK.
Additional Information
When the BlackBerry smartphone is connected
to a computer with a Windows® XP operating
system using a USB cable, a USB Storage icon
appears in the system tray.
If installing the BlackBerry Desktop Manager is
not an option (for example, the BlackBerry
smartphone user is not allowed to install any
third-party software on the computer), the
connected BlackBerry smartphone will appear as
a USB Storage icon. Update the driver by
completing the following steps:
a. On the computer, click the USB Storage
icon in the system tray.
b. Click Properties .
c. Click the Drivers tab.
d. Click the From Windows Update option
under Update driver.
e. RIMUSB.sys file version 3.1.0.1 will then
be found and installed.
f. The driver will charge the BlackBerry
8800 smartphone without installing the
BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
