I have managed to unlock the bootloader, but can't root since I don't have a backup of the recovery img. Is it even possible to root this phone.

backup firmware from your device, you can use wwr mtk guide @ https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-21970.html
when taking a firmware dump using sp flash tool, ensure to use the DA file for your device model listed @ https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-23243.html

I followed instructions on https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-21427.html to patch the boot.img and flash it, but after flashing it enters a bootloop. is there any fix for this

did you flash vbmeta before flashing patched boot?
