if the person is to try all combinations serially, then the person would start from "0000"
so he / she would have in mind to try at least 9999 more times;

That's permutation
10x10x10x10 = 10000 possible permutations in all as X3non said but you often have 10 trials or less.
I recall unlocking my sister's box using Permutation
