We usually encounter the error "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style" while trying to install windows on an MBR formatted hard disk drive.
In this guide, you will learn how to convert hard disk format from GPT to MBR and vice versa without formatting (erasing) the content of hard disk. The essence of changing the hard disk format is that you sometimes need to format it (erase) when upgrading the OS e.g from Windows 8 to 10.
Method 1: Convert Hard Disk Drive Format Using EaseUS Partition Master
Follow the below steps to convert hard disk drive format using EaseUS Parition Master.
- Download EaseUS Partition Master and Install EaseUS Partition Master
- Open and right-click on the disk you want to convert
- Click Convert MBR to GPT. If the hard disk is in GPT format you'll see Convert GPT to MBR.
- Then go up, below the Menu Bar and Click Apply to Convert.
- Wait for the Operation to Complete.
- Once the Operation has been completed, you'll see the below window pops up.
- The below screenshot shows Disk 1 is converted to GPT from MBR.
Method 2: Convert Hard Disk Drive Format with Diskpart CMD Command
Follow the below steps to Convert Hard Disk using CMD Command
- Launch command prompt as Admin (right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator)
- In CMD window, type diskpart and press Enter key (if the disk does not contain any partitions or volumes, skip to step 6)
- Type list disk and press the Enter key. Take note of the disk number you want to convert.
- Type select disk and press enter.
- Type clean and press enter to delete all partitions or volumes on the disk.
- Type convert mbr and press enter.
- Type exit and press enter.
Important Notice

- Your computer will restart if you're converting a hard disk mounted on your PC
- You don't have to back up your files because EaseUS isn't going to format the HDD
