Here is the narrative.
When I bought that tab this year, June 2022, the label on its packaging states that it is an Android 8.1 device. And even within the "About Tablet" section of its settings, its android version was stated as 8.1. But when I visited Google Play store, I discovered that I couldn't install many apps which are naturally compatible with Android 7 and Andoid 8, etc. All of them reported that the device is incompatible with the apps. Even Google Chrome browser couldn't update to the latest version. When I observed all these, I tripple-tapped the "Android Version" within the "about tablet" section of the settings to reveal its android version. To my surprise, the lolipop logo showed up. I couldn't believe that. So I connected the tab to my computer and ran some adb shell commands to get all of its properties. It was there that I saw that there is the stated version that shows up in the settings interface and the real version of the androidAlso, when I tried to view its properties via MTKDroid Tools, I saw that its actual Android version is 5.1 (Lolipop). I was disappointed, and even sad. And then I decided to install a fresh operating system on it - either Android 10 or even Android 7.
- [ro.real.android.version]: [5.1]
- [ro.build.version.release]: [8.1]
First, I tried to update the device via the manufacturer's update. I went to update section under settings, update was not available.
Next, I tried unlocking the bootloader. I went to the developer section to "enable OEM unlocking" and then reboot to fastboot. I entered the adb code to unlock the bootloader, it stated that the unlocking was successful, and the device rebooted. I went to the developer section again, the option is still there. I booted to fastboot and I saw that the bootloader has been locked again. I ran all the commands I saw on Hovatek, XDA and other android forums, each time it would indicate success and reboot but the boot loader would get locked again. So, I stopped attempting to unlock the bootloader.
Next, I decided to back up the entire ROM via Miracle Box following a guide I saw on Hovatek, it worked. The entire ROM was backed up to my computer.
Next, I decided to flash a Hovatek ported TWRP recovery for Mediatek via Miracle Box following Hovatek's guide. And this is where the discovery developed a problem. After flashing Hovatek ported TWRP recovery for Android version 5 on the device and I booted to recovery, it only just showed a blank screen for a while and it booted back to normal. I even flashed the Hovatek ported TWRP recovery for Android version 8 because I was getting desperate, it didn't work as well. So I decided to flash the stock recovery that I backed up earlier. I booted to recovery and it showed a faint gray screen. It didn't boot back to normal. It just remained like that and I couldn't do anything on it. I couldn't even power it off. The batterry is non-removable so I waited for the battery to drain off and then connected to power again. Then I powered it on. It first showed the faint gray screen and booted normally. Off course, I didn't try to boot into recovery again. Right now, when the device is powered off and I plug it into power source, I no longer see the battery charge status, it only shows that faint gray screen. And I will have to power on the tab to see the status of the battery. And anytime I power it on, it will first show the faint gray screen and boot normally.
Next, I decided to root the device via Magisk using the guide provided by Hovatek. I flashed the patched boot with Miracle Box (since Miracle Box doesn't require an unlocked bootloader). It worked, and the device is currently rooted. I have now installed Mobile Uncle, ROM ToolBox and Flashify on it.
Right now, I want to install a custom ROM onto it. I was able to get a Ressurection-Remix GSI from XDAThe ROM was confirmed by forum members to be compatible with MTK devices. The installation guide states that it should be installed via TWRP:
- XDA Thread - https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/10-0-...b.4219067/
- ROM Download - https://sourceforge.net/projects/resurre...gsi/files/)
I'm thinking of flashing with Miracle Box or Flashify because I have not been able to unlock the device's bootloader.
- > Make sure you have a custom recovery installed
- > Download the latest Resurrection Remix Rom & the latest GApps package
- > Boot into recovery
- > Perform a FULL factory wipe and wipe/system and dalvik cache as a precaution
- > Flash into system image
- > Flash Google Apps package (Optional)
- > Flash Magisk Root (Optional)
- > First boot may take up to 10 minutes.
Please, if anybody knows how I canwithout damaging it, I will very much appreciate that.
- > get a working TWRP onto this device
- > or unlock its bootloader
- > or install the custom ROM onto it maybe via Flashify or Miracle Box or Mobile Uncle or etc
Thanks in advance.
