This is a brand new phone. I bought it about a year ago but it has never been used. Please tell me I don't have to throw it in the garbage!

While trying to flash a custom OS, I used Xiaomi Mi Flash to flash an official ROM, but I forgot to change the option to lock.
The flash failed, I forgot the exact message text but it was something to the effect of "This version of MIUI cannot be installed to this device".

So now the phone is locked and does not have an OS (boots to the stock recovery) so I can't unlock it!

Please help :`(

you'll need to flash in edl mode ; see https://www.hovatek.com/forum/thread-27300.html
download & flash fastboot rom for your device using mi flash
firehose and test point for note 8 @ https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=328660
rename the firehose from the link above to match that in the firmware then copy and replace the firehose within the firmware before flashing

btw you could also use qfil in place of mi flash tool

Thank you. It will take me some time to try out your suggestion, maybe a day or two.

I was finally able to unbrick my phone.
I tried from a new computer that never had the QDLoader driver installed and I followed the instructions in the XDA thread precisely:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide...t-84425725
I was able to write the global firmware V11.0.11.0.PCOMIXM (QFIL reported success) but after rebooting, again it went directly to recovery with the same error: "This MIUI version can't be installed on this device", like in this photo (not my photo):

I suspected that the problem was that I have a Chinese version of the phone so I tried with the latest china stable ROM but received a firehose error, so my guess was that the cracked firehose file didn't work with a new version of the firmware, so I tried many versions and eventually found one that worked! It was "V11.0.8.0.PCOCNXM_20201014.0000.00_9.0_cn", download here:
https://bigota.d.miui.com/V11.0.8.0.PCOC...c29a9d.tgz

It was written with QFIL successfully and MIUI 11 was working.

Now I have to wait 15 days to unlock the bootloader Sad
