for backup, you'll get bin files
for flashing, you can use any of the two. so long as it's indicated in the scatter file
BTW you should know that format doesn't really matter, by this i mean renaming a file from e.g "recovery.bin" to "recovery.img" or even "recovery" doesn't change it's contents
