Rooting is different with custom ROM installation, you can root without installing custom ROM unless if you’re referring to custom recovery.

What’s your phone’s model?
State the phone’s build no.

what happens when you patch stock boot.img for this exact build number using magisk and flash?

Yes, you can root without custom recovery but you'll need boot.img for the phone

you can root without a custom recovery but you'd still need stock boot.img and you need a PC too
