I tried forcing 3g only by dialling *#*#4636#*#*, also used "Force LTE only" app but it keeps resetting itself to 3g/2g.

lte only is 4G, 3G should be either WCDMA or HSPA whichever one you find in the menu
btw your phone does not have "preferred network type" under network settings?
