Which particular tool and version did you use?
Did you try the other versions of the tool?

hovatek auto twrp and philz. both says dm_verity not found on my recovery img

Dm_verity not found means recovery has been ported successful and you don't need to patch boot.img, refer to https://www.hovatek.com/blog/dm_verity-i...-bootloop/
If both tools produces empty output folder try it again on a different pc.
