How to fix a Blackberry that dials USSD codes like regular phone numbers

unable to dial a ussd code on my blackberry

USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) is a Global System for Mobile(GSM) communication technology that is used to send text between a mobile phone and an application program in the network. Applications may include prepaid roaming or mobile chatting. USSD codes often have characters like ‘#’ and ‘*’ in them. Once you dial a USSD code on your phone, your service provider ought to recognize it as a command to be processed. This guide focuses on a situation where USSD codes are mistaken for phone numbers. Lets take MTN Nigeria for example. To check your account balance, you would dial *556# and get a prompt displaying your account balance right?. This tutorial is focused on rectifying a case where *556# is dialed like a regular phone number (which would be incorrect) instead of being treated like a USSD code.

Why doesn’t my Blackberry recognize USSD codes?

This issue is more likely to occur on a newly unlocked Blackberry. Its as a result of the Blackberry not being registered with your new service provider, causing the Blackberry not to recognize what format should be treated as a USSD code.

How do I make my Blackberry recognize USSD codes again?

This issue should get resolved after your first data subscription. To dial a USSD code while the Blackberry is still in this condition, simply dial your service provider’s customer care number. Once the call connects, you can go ahead with dialing the USSD code, it’ll work.

How do I register the Blackberry with my service provider?
